Highlight

In Matsumae, the feel of the old world is alive and well; this area is sometimes referred to as the “little Kyoto of the north.” Unusual for Hokkaido, a range of cherry blossoms bloom here for a period of about one month. Take a guided tour of the historic sites around Matsumae, and then view the 10,000 cherry trees of 250 types at Matsumae Castle, the only extant castle in Hokkaido. During the cherry blossom season, there is also a festival in Matsumae. This tour also allows you to tour the local temples and shrines, as well as the old castle town and feudal lord residences. Then, take a meal at Yano Ryokan, a traditional inn which will prepare various local seafood specialties, like tuna, tailored to your budget.
