Southern Area A treasure trove of coastal beauty and seafood on Okushiri Island
Highlight
April to October is the best time to visit Okushiri Island, located in the Sea of Japan just off the coast of southwestern Hokkaido. Popular scenic spots include Nabetsuri Rock, Miyazu Bentengu Shrine, Sainokawara Park, Kabuto Iwa and other locations along the western coastline. The sunsets seen from the west coast are particularly spectacular and a great way to experience the area's natural beauty. Local food is also delicious and well known, especially the seafood, such as sea urchins and abalone. Some people travel all the way here just to savor the rich and sweet taste of the sea urchins caught here.
